Penguin Cross is the penguin game.
Higher multiplier means lower survival, not a higher base expected return.
A configured pool share is not a guaranteed spawn rate.
Ten cash-out steps. The fail chance is the risk of the next jump from that step, not the chance of missing the step itself.
| Step | Cash-out | Chance to reach from the start | Next-step failure risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.2× | 83.33% | 20% |
| 2 | 1.5× | 66.67% | 25% |
| 3 | 2× | 50% | 33.33% |
| 4 | 3× | 33.33% | 40% |
| 5 | 5× | 20% | 50% |
| 6 | 10× | 10% | 60% |
| 7 | 25× | 4% | 66.67% |
| 8 | 75× | 1.333% | 70% |
| 9 | 250× | 0.4% | 75% |
| 10 | 1000× | 0.1% | — |
The first jump, before any cash-out, fails about 16.67% of the time. That is not the next-step risk shown on Step 1.
33.33%
Chance a fresh run reaches 3× from the start. This is the number behind the step you are standing on.
40%
Chance the very next jump out of 3× fails. This is a different number, and it is the one that decides whether to push.
Each extra step is a smaller chance of still being alive.
You push one step at a time, or cash out. There are 10 cash-out steps, from 1.2× to 1000×.
The next-step fail chance is not an arbitrary list. It is:
Clamp01(1 - currentStepMultiplier / nextStepMultiplier)
Survival from the start to multiplier m is 1/m.
3× is 1/3. 5× is 1/5. 25× is 1/25. 1000× is 1/1000.
Survival × payout is about 1 at every normal cash-out.
Not for base expected return. Walking further raises variance. It does not raise the base expected return.
3×, 10× and 1000× each come out to about 1.
So there is no magic step with a higher base EV, and no “sweet spot” step to recommend by itself.
Cash out early.
Stop at the lowest qualifying multiplier.
A higher multiplier makes a profit buff worth more, and it also cuts the survival chance hard.
The same base expected return does not mean the same campaign risk. 1000× fails about 99.9% of attempts.
Tell the page your current step, your goal and your profit factor. It returns cash out or push, with the exact odds behind the call.
My goal
Cash out
Cash out. Your 3× already satisfies this goal, and a higher multiplier does not complete the challenge more.
If your current payout already covers the quota, secure it. Continuing does not improve Penguin Cross base expected return.
0.1%
In the base model, survival to a multiplier is 1 divided by that multiplier, so 1000× survives about 1 in 1,000 runs from the start.
About 1 in 1,000 attempts survive from the start all the way to 1000×.
That is a long-run expectation, not a guarantee that it lands once every 1,000 attempts.

| 25× | 1 / 25 · 4% |
| 75× | 1 / 75 · 1.333% |

Floor 2. Two qualifying Penguin Cross wins in a row, each with a final payout of at least 3×. Reward: 10 tickets.
With no profit buff, stop at Step 4 = 3×.
One round succeeds about 33.33% of the time.
A simple two-round window is 1/9, about 11.11%.
The average wait for two in a row is about 12 rounds.
Reaching 5× or 10× does not satisfy the challenge any more. It only adds a chance to break the streak. Cash out at 3×.
The check is final payout ≥ 3×, so a profit buff can qualify on a lower raw cash-out. Use the qualifier below.
Reported issue. Players have unlocked this achievement, so this is a checklist, not a claim that it is currently broken.
Reported issue
The shared final-payout solver. Enter a positive-profit factor and it returns the lowest cash-out that still qualifies.
Positive-profit factor
One-round figures are exact for the configured step model. The two-win window and the waiting time assume independent rounds.
Floor 3. Final payout at least 4× on Penguin Cross. Reward: 12 tickets.
Traffic Monster says 4× — why can’t I find 4×?
The ladder goes 3×, then 5×. 4× is the challenge threshold, not a cash-out.
There is no 4× step. With no payout buff, you need to cash out at 5×.
From the start, 5× survives about 20% of the time.
Once 5× qualifies, pushing to 10× only adds a 50% chance to fail the next step. Cash out at 5×.
A profit buff can drop the raw step well below 5×. Traffic Monster is worth doing with a profit buff. Use the qualifier below.
Reported issue. The first check is whether the cash-out actually qualified.
With no buff, the cash-out has to be 5×, because there is no 4× step.
Reported issue
The shared final-payout solver. Enter a positive-profit factor and it returns the lowest cash-out that still qualifies.
Positive-profit factor
One-round figures are exact for the configured step model. The two-win window and the waiting time assume independent rounds.
Floor 4. The Steam line only says to spend a lot on Penguin Cross. The check is a cumulative bet equal to the current quota.
Total Penguin Cross wager required
A $10B quota needs $10B wagered on Penguin Cross.
It is not one bet, and it does not require a win.
The useful plan is to stack registered wager quickly and with less bankroll swing. An early practical cash-out can cut variance and get you into the next bet. Speed depends on the table max, the round length and the bankroll, not on 1000×.
A high multiplier has no direct advantage here. It is not what the tracker measures.
Turn the challenge into wager throughput: how much is left, and how many full-max wagers finish it.
If your goal is wager throughput rather than payout chasing, use an early practical cash-out.
The two win challenges care about payout. No Hesitation cares about wager volume. Different challenges, different useful items.
Winner Winner and Traffic Monster check a final payout, so profit modifiers lower the raw step you need. Gambler’s Confidence is the confirmed positive-profit source.
Taser raises Max Bet, so No Hesitation needs fewer wagers. A Golden Chip free wager counts toward the cumulative bet only if the wager tracker registers it.
This page uses one number, the positive-profit factor (1×, 1.5×, 2×, or custom), instead of hardcoding each buff. Where that factor comes from is covered on the Items page.
Floor 1 does not have it. Floors 2, 3 and 4 do.
| Floor | In the pool | Configured pool share |
|---|---|---|
| Floor 1 | No | — |
| Floor 2 | Yes | 11.11% of a 9-game pool |
| Floor 3 | Yes | 9.091% of a 11-game pool |
| Floor 4 | Yes | 6.25% of a 16-game pool |
Configured pool share is not a guaranteed spawn rate. The three official achievements are what public notes confirm; the pool data is what closes which floors actually list the game.
Verified logic sets step risk from the multiplier transition. There is no verified left lane, right lane, alternating pattern or remembered route with better base odds.
No verified visual route has better base odds.
This page can build a step risk calculator. It does not build a safe lane predictor, because the path selection has not been resolved.
Animation fix only in the published patch notes. No Penguin Cross rule or balance change was announced.
An animation timing change is not evidence that the animation predicts the next step.
Every Penguin Cross claim is labeled by how it was established.

Penguin Cross. It is on Floors 2, 3 and 4, with 10 cash-out steps from 1.2× to 1000×.
The player-facing name is Penguin Cross. That is the name on the Steam achievements. Crossy Road is an internal asset name, not the guide name.
Each step either fails or reaches the next cash-out. You can cash out on the current multiplier or push. Fail chance of the next step is 1 minus the current multiplier divided by the next one.
Ten cash-out steps, from 1.2× to 1000×.
1.2×, 1.5×, 2×, 3×, 5×, 10×, 25×, 75×, 250× and 1000×.
1.2×. The first jump before that fails about 16.67% of the time.
From the start: 3× is 1/3 (33.33%), 5× is 1/5 (20%), and 10× is 1/10 (10%).
0.1%, about 1 in 1,000 runs from the start.
About one in 1,000 on average. That is an expectation, not a guarantee that it lands once every 1,000 runs.
There is no best step for base expected return. Every normal cash-out is about 1. Cash out early for lower variance, or at the lowest step that qualifies for the achievement you want.
Use the decision engine at the top: pick your goal, your current step and your profit factor, and it returns the action. Protect bankroll means cash out early; a payout achievement means the lowest qualifying step; No Hesitation means wager throughput.
No. Higher multipliers raise variance, not base expected return. Survival × payout is about 1 at every normal stop.
On Floor 2, cash out two rounds in a row at a final payout of at least 3×. With no buff, that is Step 4 (3×), then stop.
The challenge only counts qualifying wins. Reaching 5× or 10× does not count twice, and it adds a chance to break the streak.
About 12 rounds on average under the independence model. One round succeeds about 33.33% of the time.
Yes. The check is the final payout, so a profit factor can let 2× or 1.5× qualify. Enter the factor in the qualifier to see the lowest step.
On Floor 3, the final payout has to be at least 4×. With no buff there is no 4× step, so cash out at 5× and stop.
4× is the final-payout threshold. The ladder jumps from 3× to 5×. With no profit buff, 5× is the first cash-out that qualifies.
Because 3× is below the 4× threshold and the next step is 5×. 5× is the lowest cash-out that reaches 4× with no profit factor.
Yes. With a 1.5× profit factor, a raw 3× reaches 4× final. The qualifier above shows the exact factor-to-step mapping.
Players have reported long sessions with no unlock. First confirm the cash-out was actually 5× with no buff, on Floor 3, with the challenge active, and that you cashed out before failing. Treat a Steam notification miss as separate from the challenge. This is a reported issue, not a confirmed break.
On Floor 4, build cumulative registered Penguin Cross wager up to the current quota. A $10B quota means $10B of registered wager.
No. It counts cumulative registered wager. Losses count. The multiplier is not the condition.
Not directly. The tracker measures wager, not the multiplier. An early cash-out can be better because it starts the next registered wager sooner.
Yes. Taser raises Max Bet, so the same quota takes fewer wagers. The wager planner shows the minimum full-max wagers left.
Only if the wager tracker registers the free wager. Treat it as conditional until that path is confirmed.
Floors 2, 3 and 4. Floor 1 does not. Pool share is about 11.11%, 9.09% and 6.25% on those floors, and that share is not a guaranteed spawn.
On Floor 1 it is not unlocked. On Floors 2, 3 and 4 it is eligible but not guaranteed, so the current layout can leave it out.
No verified safe route exists. Step risk comes from the multiplier transition, not from a lane.
No verified evidence says a lane, an alternating pattern or a remembered route changes the base odds.
Save and reload behavior is not inferred here. Step risk is a multiplier-transition rule. See the save guide for reload behavior.
